Inspired Atomic Alphabet by Chris Burden, I’ve spend the last couple of years researching on language and its relationship with power, control and order. I seek to question the societal systems and systems of believe that not only promote human exceptionalism, but also claim the right of humans to act upon others non-humans at our will. This installation reflects on the ambiguity between notions of care and protection regarding the domestication of animals and how language--through naming, classification and categorazation--allow us to exert power towards them.
Built in ceramics in the size of a toy, they serve as a reminiscent of small set of figurines my maternal grandmother used to collect and store behind glass protected cabinets, meant to be seen, but never to be touched and even less to be played with. For years, I thought that if I behaved as she expected finally one day I would be allowed to touch them, and while learning my place, I also accepted the givenness of many of the rules I grew up with. Now, I find in ceramics and in hand building a possibility for a world making where different ways of interacting and form kinship with others (animals and non-humans) is possible. I found in this process a way of resistance against contemporary dynamics of capitalism and mass production, and a way of practice a more athentive way of looking.
